[Infographic] Wisconsin Swing Voters Hone In On Fiscal Policies

Wisconsin’s Governor’s race is of particular interest this year as Scott Walker, the state’s current Governor who previously assumed office after a recall election, faces reelection. Resonate took a deeper look at the issues that matter most to voters in America’s Dairyland, as well as in its 8th congressional district.

Resonate’s survey data finds that, when asked how they vote, 37% report consistently voting for Democratic candidates, 31% vote Republican and 24% report swing voting behaviors.

Statewide, most Democratic voters evaluate healthcare policy, with 60% citing it as a top platform consideration. They also look at a candidate’s stance on education (49%) and job creation (47%) when making their decision. Republicans look at government spending (68%), balanced budget (61%) and tax policy (45%). Government spending platforms are also important for swing voters with 47% agreeing it’s a top issue. Job creation and balanced budget both receive 46% of swing voters indicating its importance

Democratic and Republican voters remain deeply divided on social issues, similar to Michigan. For example, Republican voters are 5.1 times more likely to be involved with traditional marriage policies and 4.8 times more involved in 2nd amendment rights issues than their Democratic counterparts. Conversely, Democratic voters are 4.3 times more likely than Republican voters to be concerned with gender/race equality policies. They’re also 4.2 times more likely to be involved in gay/lesbian rights and 3.7 times more likely to be involved in pro-choice issues than Republicans.

The 8th Congressional District has a higher concentration of Republican voters (34%), but the swing voters align more closely with Democratic voters. Only 40% of swing voters within the district ranked balanced budget as a major platform consideration. Instead, more voters prioritized healthcare policy (47%), which is also a key platform issue for 54% of Democratic voters.
