With a few short weeks left, Colorado remains a toss-up for Senate, and is key in the battle for control of the upper chamber of Congress. Resonate took a deeper look at the issues that matter most to voters in the Centennial State, as well as in its 5th Congressional District.
Resonate’s survey data finds that 33% report consistent Democratic voting patterns, 34% vote Republican and 25% cast their votes across party lines, i.e. swing voters.
Statewide, the majority of Democratic voters, 56%, look at a candidate’s platform on healthcare, while 48% consider education and 46% job creation. Government spending policies are important to 60% of Republican voters. They also rank a candidate’s stance on balanced budget (56%) and defense/military (51%). Swing voters also prioritize government spending (49%) and job creation (47%).
Republican and Democratic voters remain deeply divided on social issues – more so than in other states we’ve examined. For example, Republican voters are 11.6x more involved in traditional marriage issues and 6.2x more involved in 2nd amendment rights than their Democratic counterparts. Conversely, Democratic voters are 6.3x more likely than Republican voters to be concerned for gender/race equality. They’re also 5.5x more likely to be involved in pro-choice issues than Republicans.
When we took a closer look at Colorado’s 5th Congressional District, we saw that Democratic and Republican voters rank issues of a candidate’s platform with the same relative importance. But in this district, which is home to the Air Force Academy and Schriever AFB, the electorate skews towards more Republican voters (36%). But the swing voters align more closely with Democratic voters than they do at the state level.
